Design advice for beginners

When beginning in graphic design it can be overwhelming the amount of
information to learn and the amount of styles that exist. Like with anything it is what you learned in college or prep school that helps get your started in your job field; but what really educates you is real on the job experience.

As any designer or individual would be when they take their first job they can find themselves overwhelmed by their work load, or even the work itself. Every school tries to educate you about everything but they can only cover so much, and even when they do cover a subject it is for a limited time. This of course affects you when you get to the real world.

As an example when I started my first design job after college, it started off pretty well, I felt strong in my background and had a good starting point. As time went on and projects became more diverse I began to realize that there is many things I still needed to learn and lots of skills to develop. Company logos for example and web layouts were some of the things, I had learned in college but never spent months on. Now I had to take over these things at the company I was working for and it took time to learn all there is.

How did I make it and became a senior artist? I pulled every design magazine and book that company owned. I did research online and found
company logos to reference styles of logos. I used tutorials and later on learned to develop and design my own company logos, and web layouts.

Just because you graduated doesn’t mean you should stop learning. Always
look up and research references, and study new design. Keep current
with the yearly trends and move forward with all of your design styles.
Never get stuck with one style make sure you adapt to new things. Design
magazines are great and cheap source of inspiration and so are books like logo lounge which I have actually been published in twice. Always
remember to never stop learning.
